Year 3

In Year 3 at Hounslow Town Primary School, pupils embark on a rich and varied curriculum designed to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and develop independent thinking through enquiry-based learning. Our approach encourages children to ask meaningful questions, investigate ideas in depth, and make connections across subjects — laying strong foundations for lifelong learning.

Across the year, pupils explore four exciting topics: The Stone Age, The Ancient Greeks, Tremors, and Urban Pioneers. Each unit is thoughtfully planned to ignite imagination and support cross-curricular learning.

In the autumn term, the year begins with an immersive study of The Stone Age. Pupils investigate early human life, archaeology, and how people survived and thrived in prehistoric times. A hands-on Stone Age workshop brings history to life, giving children the opportunity to handle artefacts, dress in period costume, and take part in survival-themed activities. A visit to a local Gurdwara also supports the development of understanding and respect for world faiths during this term.

The spring term focuses on The Ancient Greeks, where pupils explore the legacy of Greek culture, mythology, and democracy. Through an engaging Ancient Greek Day, pupils experience aspects of Greek life and learning, from drama and architecture to philosophy and the Olympic Games.

In Tremors, pupils investigate natural disasters, including earthquakes and volcanoes, blending geography with science and literacy. This topic promotes a global awareness and empathy, as pupils explore how natural phenomena affect communities around the world.

Finally, Urban Pioneers invites children to look closely at their local environment. Through a local walk and mapping activities, pupils develop their geographical skills and reflect on the impact of urban development and architecture. This topic also supports artistic expression, as pupils are encouraged to observe, sketch, and reimagine their surroundings through creative projects.

Throughout the year, learning is enriched by whole-school events such as World Book Day, where reading for pleasure is celebrated, and a poetry performance, in which pupils develop their confidence and spoken language skills.

Year 3 at Hounslow Town is a time of growing independence, expanding knowledge, and fostering a genuine love of learning. Through carefully chosen topics, memorable experiences, and a focus on enquiry, children are supported to become thoughtful, engaged, and enthusiastic learners.
