Arts (Art, Music & DT)

Our Vision and Aims

Our Arts program is split into three sections; Art, Design Technology and Music. The Arts have a high profile within our school and this is promoted through specialist weeks and events and through the provision of extra-curricular clubs in all areas of the arts in both Key Stages One and Two.

Our aim is to capture the imagination and foster the love of the arts through a wholly inclusive and creative curriculum. We provide plentiful opportunities to develop the children's interests and use these to inspire and engage.

Art and Design

‘Every child is an artist.  The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.’  Pablo Picasso

At Hounslow Town we aim to:

  • Provide all children with access to imaginative and innovative lessons, which will foster enthusiasm for the arts subjects
  • Encourage all to experience, imagine, and express ideas and feelings with confidence
  • Inspire children to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Develop learners that become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art and design techniques
  • Allow opportunity to evaluate, analyse and compare creative works of their own and others using the language of art and design
  • Empower students to select and use the appropriate resources safely with adult supervision ensuring that all necessary safety precautions have taken place
  • Provide opportunities to explore and experiment with visual elements, for example, pattern, texture, colour, line, tone, shape, form and space using a range of media
  • Grow children’s knowledge allowing them to know about great artists and designers and understand the historical and cultural developments of their art forms
  • Develop the children’s skills of working both independently and cooperatively

Music

At Hounslow Town Primary School, music is an exciting and valued part of our curriculum and school life. Using high-quality schemes such as Charanga and Kapow, our music lessons are inclusive, engaging, and enriching for all pupils. Children explore musical concepts through singing, movement, instrumental work, composition, and listening activities, developing both technical skills and creative confidence.

Through our music lessons, we explore culture and diversity from around the globe, helping children gain a deeper appreciation for the world through sound. Pupils are introduced to a wide range of musical styles, genres, and traditions — celebrating music from different communities, countries, and historical periods.

In our school, music is also used as a powerful form of communication and expression, particularly in our SEN classrooms, where it supports emotional development, sensory engagement, and meaningful connection. We believe every child should have the opportunity to experience the joy of music in a way that suits their individual needs and abilities.

Music is celebrated across the school in performances and assemblies, giving pupils the opportunity to share their learning and talents with the wider school community. Beyond the classroom, children can take part in a range of musical opportunities, including our popular Young Voices Choir, Performing Arts Club, and small group instrumental tuition in piano, violin, and guitar. These experiences help to build confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of the arts.

We are also proud to take our musical learning out into the wider community. Our pupils  perform at local care homes and community events, including singing to bring festive cheer to the people of Hounslow. These moments of connection and joy highlight the power of music to unite people of all ages and backgrounds.

At Hounslow Town, music is more than just a subject — it’s a way for children to express themselves, connect with others, explore the world, and create lasting memories.

Design Technology

The children at our school participate in engaging and creative design technology lessons through a range of activities including food technology, woodwork skills and the use of malleable sculpting materials. The children learn to develop their creativity and practical skills using a range of tools and resources. In design technology lessons, children spend time carefully planning, creating and evaluating their designs.

We are fortunate in that we have a fully equipped kitchen in school where children can prepare and cook both hot and cold dishes in a safe environment.
