Science

At Hounslow Town Primary School, we recognise the importance of science in developing children’s natural curiosity and their understanding of the world around them. Our science curriculum is designed to build systematically on prior learning so that knowledge and skills are revisited, deepened and securely embedded.

Pupils enjoy engaging in a first-hand, enquiry-based approach, which encourages them to ask questions, investigate and draw conclusions. This learning is enriched through carefully chosen educational visits to local parks, museums and gardens, as well as by welcoming scientists and relevant experiences into school. These opportunities make science meaningful and memorable, helping pupils to see its relevance to their own lives and the wider world.

We place a strong emphasis on developing pupils’ ability to talk confidently about their science learning. A clear and progressive approach to scientific vocabulary is taught at each stage, enabling children to explain concepts with accuracy and precision.

Science at Hounslow Town is celebrated through motivational, exciting and memorable cross-curricular science weeks, which also reflect and celebrate our rich cultural diversity. These events raise aspirations, strengthen cultural capital and highlight the significance of science in everyday life and in a wide range of future careers.

Our intent is that all pupils leave Hounslow Town Primary School with:
        •   secure knowledge of key scientific concepts;
        •   the skills to work scientifically with confidence both independently and in groups;
        •   the curiosity to continue exploring scientific ideas; observing, asking questions and making links in order to make sense of the world.

  • the ability to talk about and explain a variety of scientific phenomenon using the correct vocabulary
  • the cultural awareness to appreciate the impact of science in an increasingly diverse and global society.
