Modern Foreign Languages

Article 29: Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full

The intention of the French curriculum at Hounslow Town Primary school is to design a curriculum so that our children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children’s confidence and creative skills, as well as striving to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language. We will deliver lessons that will help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries. We want our children to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to enable them to use and apply their French in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning.

At Hounslow Town Primary School, our children learn French from Year 3 to Year 6. In Year 6, they also begin Spanish lessons in the spring term. We believe that introducing a second modern foreign language at this stage not only broadens their knowledge of the world but also prepares them for the transition to secondary school. By having experience in both French and Spanish, our pupils are better equipped to build on their prior learning, expand their vocabulary, and make an informed choice about which language they would like to continue studying in Key Stage 3.
